dc.description.abstractLa configuración del manzarero central de la ciudad de Santiago, como una rica y compleja retícula peatonal de galerías cubiertas y pasajes abiertos que se yuxtaponen al orden de la malla octogonal de calles, paseos espacios públicos, ponen de manifiesto la evolución registrada en el tejido geométrico fundacional desde el siglo XVI al presente, y al gran capacidad de estas unidades de relleno para acoger a lo largo del tiempo, los sucesivos procesos de transformación urbana y particularmente, la variedad de nuevas operaciones de arquitectura que fueron parte del proceso de modernización registrado desde la segunda mitad el siglo XIX
dc.description.abstractThe configuration of the city's central blocks in Santiago, as a rich and complex reticule of the pedestrian zone of covered galleries and open passages, which are juxtaposed to the order of the orthogonal mesh of streets, walks and public spaces, revela yhe evolution that has been registred in the foundational geometric tissue from the sixteenth century tode present. It also shows high capacity of these filler units to accommodate over time, successive urban transformation processes and particularly, the variety of ew architectural operations that were part of the modernization recorded since the second half of the nineteenth century.Based on the regular and homogenepus layout of the morphologic pattern set with the grid, galleries and passages from the city center, represent one of the most important transformations inthe history of urban development in our continent, which also had the role of materializing a morphological order superior to the elementality of the initial matrix, with the creation of an own form. This work reviews this process, which began in 1850 and whose operations, which changer the image of the founding historical center, which continues today
