- ItemA Latin Spring? Examining digital diffusion and youth bulges in forecasting political change in Latin America(Routledge, 2014) Bachmann C., Ingrid; Groshek, Jacob; Brewer, Anita; Welp, YaninaThe story is quite different in the countries that experienced the Arab Spring, where autocratic governments were still the rule in the twenty-first century. Arguably, shifts in democratic countries would be more likely to be measured rather than major revolutions like the ones that ended up ousting Hosni Mubarak in Egypt and Ben Ali in Tunisia. Conventional wisdom suggests that mass media and media diffusion are important for public deliberation, and play an important role fostering and maintaining democracy and stable societies. Research from political science and mass communication stresses the democratizing role of media. Indeed, in the last decades both neoliberal economics and populist politics have coexisted in several Latin American countries, for both left- and right-leaning governments. On the whole, the region has gone through overall economic stabilization, although political conflicts related to poorly distributed income, high unemployment, and lack of opportunities for young and indigenous people persist in most of the countries.

- ItemAnalysis of Multidisciplinary Collaboration in Primary Healthcare: The Chilean Case(2017) Saint-Pierre, Cecilia; Sepúlveda, Marcos; Herskovic, ValeriaAround 10% of the population suffers from diabetes, and this percentage is expected to rise. Healthcare guidelines propose a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach for treatment. However, there is little data to understand whether healthcare professionals are actually collaborating and how this collaboration takes place. We analyzed 4 years of data from 3 healthcare centers in Chile, corresponding to 2,838 patients. Patients were classified according to the composition of the healthcare team into four categories: highly multidisciplinary teams, specialized teams, physician-nurse centered teams, and non-collaborative treatment. Our results show that team prevalence is related to patient and healthcare center characteristics.

- ItemApplying Clustering in Process Mining to Find Different Versions of a Business Process That Changes over Time(Springer, 2012) Luengo Mundaca, Daniela Lorena; Sepúlveda Fernández, Marcos ErnestoMost Process Mining techniques assume business processes remain steady through time, when in fact their underlying design could evolve over time. Discovery algorithms should be able to automatically find the different versions of a process, providing independent models to describe each of them. In this article, we present an approach that uses the starting time of each process instance as an additional feature to those considered in traditional clustering approaches. By combining control-flow and time features, the clusters formed share both a structural similarity and a temporal proximity. Hence, the process model generated for each cluster should represent a different version of the analyzed business process. A synthetic example set was used for testing, showing the new approach outperforms the basic approach. Although further testing with real data is required, these results motivate us to deepen on this research line.
- ItemAttending to the Stream of Consciousness: a Methodological Challenge(Springer-Verlag, 2009) Cosmelli, Diego; Aboitiz, Francisco; Cosmelli, DiegoAttention is usually conceptualized, and empirically approached, as a matter of selection, information reduction, and performance enhancement. In this context, a wealth of experimental approaches have been developed to study sustained attention, selective attention, orienting, divided attention, conflict resolution, and so on. However, much less importance has been traditionally accorded to a more intimate yet pervasive aspect of attention: how it continuously shifts and moves within the stream of consciousness — the ongoing flow of perceptions, thoughts, images, and feelings we all experience during any normal day. In this chapter we survey some of the traditional ways in which attention is experimentally studied while pointing out some limitations and potential interests these approaches have for the study of attention in the stream of consciousness. We highlight, based on a phenomenological approach to its dynamics, one crucial aspect of attention that has been systematically neglected, and that could have important consequences for its study. Taking into account the spontaneous nature of attentional shifts during the stream of consciousness leads us to consider recent developments in brain imaging, experimental psychology, and signal analysis that are beginning to establish a framework for the scientific study of this elusive phenomenon.
- ItemBayesian Nonparametric Approaches for ROC Curve Inference(2015) Calhau Fernandes, Inacio De Carvalho Vanda; Jara, Alejandro; Bras De Carvalho, MiguelThe development of medical diagnostic tests is of great importance in clinical practice, public health, and medical research. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve is a popular tool for evaluating the accuracy of such tests. We review Bayesian nonparametric methods based on Dirichlet process mixtures and the Bayesian bootstrap for ROC curve estimation and regression. The methods are illustrated by means of data concerning diagnosis of lung cancer in women.

- ItemBiblical Techniques for the Interpretation of the Nicene Creed: the Case of Athanasius’ De synodis(Ferdinand Schöning / Brill, 2020) Fernández Eyzaguirre, Samuel José; Usacheva, Anna; Jacobsen, Anders Ch.The Trinitarian controversy of the 350s revolved around synodical texts, because the term ‘consubstantial’ (ὁμοούσιος), proclaimed by the synod of Nicaea (325), was rejected by many of the eastern bishops. For the first time in history, an important theological discussion was shaped not only by the interpretation of Scripture but also the understanding of a creed. Within this new institutional and theological context, Athanasius of Alexandria, in his work De synodis (359), made a serious attempt to establish criteria for interpreting synodical texts. The present article studies Athanasius’ effort to apply biblical hermeneutical criteria to the interpretation of synodical documents. In order to shed light on this innovative contribution of Athanasius, the article proceeds as follows: first, I review the historical and theological context of his activity; second, I examine each of the objections to the Nicaean creed and the solutions offered by the Bishop of Alexandria; finally, I explore the rationale of Athanasius’ interpretation of synodical documents and its significance for the formation of Christian discourse.
