- ItemDesign and Evaluation of a Low-cost High-resolution multi touch capacitive sensor for Expressive digital Musical interfaces(2025) Rozas, Michel V.; Cadiz Cadiz, Rodrigo Fernando; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Escuela de IngenieríaThis thesis presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of a low-cost, high resolution capacitive multitouch sensor aimed at enhancing expressivity in Digital Musi cal Interfaces (DMIs). The sensor employs a diamond-pattern capacitor electrode matrix to minimize ghost points (false touch detections where the sensor mistakenly registers touches where there are none) and utilizes a quasi-static electric field detection method based on mutual capacitance. Built using affordable materials and accessible microcon trollers (ATmega2560 and Espressif ESP32), the system achieves high spatial resolution (5 mm minimum distinguishable distance), low latency (average 13.7 ms), and the ability to infer relative pressure through contact area variation. A detailed technical evaluation covering spatial resolution, positional accuracy, latency, and pressure sensitivity demon strates performance comparable to commercial solutions. This work contributes a scalable and replicable platform for researchers, educators, and independent musicians seeking to explore expressive gestural interaction in music technology, while addressing cost and accessibility barriers commonly found in high-end DMI systems.
