Abstract
Emma Hamilton es el caso de una mujer pobre del siglo XVIII que, mediante habilidades femeniles apreciadas en su época, logra superar su condición social y económica de origen y convertirse en una de las mujeres más famosas de Europa, así como una de las más retratadas de Inglaterra. Nacida en la pobreza, se convierte en amante y/o acompañante de diversos caballeros de sociedad, hasta llegar a casarse con sir William Hamilton, embajador de Inglaterra en Nápoles. Ahí conoce al almirante Horacio Nelson, con quien tuvo una comentada y criticada relación amorosa. A pesar de sus encumbramientos sociales, muere sola, enferma, abandonada y pobre. El caso de Hamilton estimula algunas preguntas respecto de dónde poner el foco para visualizar el balance de su vida: ¿en aquel período en que su vida es un ejemplo de éxito y de ascensos? ¿o en aquel en que es más bien un ejemplo de fracaso? ¿en el tiempo posterior en que su figura ha sido revitalizada a través de películas y novelas? Las diversas miradas epocales nos permiten reflexionar acerca de la subjetividad y dinamismo del concepto de éxito y fracaso y sus representaciones.
