Abstract
Intervening on heritage is never simple. Even if the desire for transformation exists -as this winning competition entry from 2018 will recall- it can be impaired by administrative problems or lack of investors willing to subsume the financial risk. In their project for Castillo Hidalgo -a historic monument located atop a historic hill in the center of Santiago- de la Cerda, Izquierdo and Núñez ration demolitions but intervene decidedly over the building and its site. Thus, reminding us that transformation is about re-making connections: between existing and proposed buildings, with the hill’s current system of walkways and lookouts, but also with its past programs, reimagined from the contemporary demands of its location.
