Abstract
As has happened in most of the countries belonging to the so-called continental world, whether of Protestant or Catholic background, the legal significance of religious marriage in Chile has evolved. Part of the change has not been original; it has reflected similar changes in countries like France or Spain that historically have been the natural sources of the Chilean legal system. Nevertheless, the latest reform in civil marriage legislation has introduced some rules or principles that, to the eyes of foreign jurists, may seem curious. And so may the debates that have arisen afterwards. These events are interesting because they show how complex it can be to establish the perfect relationship between religious and civil marriage, even in a country that has been historically Catholic.
