Abstract
Forty species of marine algae (10 Chlorophyta, 9 Phaeophyta and 21 Rhodophyta) are newly reported from central and northern Chile. Of these, 17 are new to Pacific South America, the remaining are range extensions from Peru and within Chile, including Fuegia. Twenty-one taxa, including 9 previously reported, are primarily temperate in distribution, and represent a group of bipolar species. Seven are tropical or subtropical in relationship, and 6 are subantarctic. The mix of species is a reflection of the long Chilean coast line and the large variety of physical parameters that affect ecology and distribution.
