Abstract
The taxonomic status of Acropeltis chilensis Montagne, Gelidium congestum Taylor, G. crispum Howe, G. filicinum Bory, G. howei Acleto and G. lingulatum Kutzing is reviewed. The genus Acropeltis should be merged into Gelidium and the new combination G. chilense (Montagne) Santelices and Motalva [Acropeltis chilensis] is therefore proposed. G. filicinum is absent from Chile and restricted to the Society Islands, northern Peru and the Galapagos. The Peruvian species G. crispum and G. congestum probably represent forms of G. lingulatum. G. howei from Peru cannot be distinguished from the newly typified G. filicinum Bory.
