The article addresses tourism development in three indigenousterritories in Chile, characterized not only by their natural andcultural attractions but because indigenous culture is considereda tourism asset. It discusses and compares the role of publicpolicies in the promotion and ‘touristification’ of these territories, and the tensions generated when culture is considered from anobjectivized perspective to have tourism value. Mapuche tourismin the Araucanía Region is discussed in depth and compared withtourism in San Pedro de Atacama and Easter Island, where thisactivity has a longer history and is more developed. In contextsmarked by neoliberalism and the weak recognition of indigenouspeoples such as Chile, analysis of the role of tourism from acomparative, contextualized perspective of state construction ofthe value of indigenous culture reveals the contradictions andsynergies that the commercialization of culture produces amongstate agents, indigenous individuals and other actors present inindigenous territories
