- ItemAugmenting BERT-style Models with Predictive Coding to Improve Discourse-level Representations(ASSOC COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS-ACL, 2021) Araujo Vasquez, Vladimir Giovanny; Villa, Andres; Mendoza Rocha, Marcelo Gabriel; Moens, Marie-Francine; Soto, AlvaroCurrent language models are usually trained using a self-supervised scheme, where the main focus is learning representations at the word or sentence level. However, there has been limited progress in generating useful discourse-level representations. In this work, we propose to use ideas from predictive coding theory to augment BERT-style language models with a mechanism that allows them to learn suitable discourse-level representations. As a result, our proposed approach is able to predict future sentences using explicit top-down connections that operate at the intermediate layers of the network. By experimenting with benchmarks designed to evaluate discourse-related knowledge using pre-trained sentence representations, we demonstrate that our approach improves performance in 6 out of 11 tasks by excelling in discourse relationship detection.

- ItemBidirectional Constraints for Exchanging Data: Beyond Monotone Queries(IJCAI-INT JOINT CONF ARTIF INTELL, 2015) Arenas, Marcelo; Dieguez, Gabriel; Perez, Jorge; Yang, Q; Wooldridge, MIn this paper, we propose to use the language of bidirectional constraints to specify schema mappings in the context of data exchange. These constraints impose restrictions over both the source and the target data, and have the potential to minimize the ambiguity in the description of the target data to be materialized. We start by making a case for the usefulness of bidirectional constraints to give a meaningful closed-world semantics for st-tgds, which is motivated by Clark's predicate completion and Reiter's formalization of the closed-world assumption of a logical theory. We then formally study the use of bidirectional constraints in data exchange. In particular, we pinpoint the complexity of the existence-of-solutions and the query evaluation problems in several different scenarios, including in the latter case both monotone and nonmonotone queries.

- ItemFrom Belief in Conspiracy Theories to Trust in Others: Which Factors Influence Exposure, Believing and Sharing Fake News(SPRINGER INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHING AG, 2019) Halpern, Daniel; Valenzuela, Sebastián; Katz, James; Miranda, Juan Pablo; Meiselwitz, GDrawing on social-psychological and political research, we offer a theoretical model that explains how people become exposed to fake news, come to believe in them and then share them with their contacts. Using two waves of a nationally representative sample of Chileans with internet access, we pinpoint the relevant causal factors. Analysis of the panel data indicate that three groups of variables largely explain these phenomena: (1) Personal and psychological factors such as belief in conspiracy theories, trust in others, education and gender; (2) Frequency and specific uses of social media; and (3) Political views and online activism. Importantly, personal and political-psychological factors are more relevant in explaining this behavior than specific uses of social media.
