    Alice in randomland: a resource for improving attitudes towards probability and its teaching

    © International Association for Statistical Education (IASE/ISI)This article presents the results of a study aimed at examining how primary school teachers’ attitudes towards probability and its teaching are influenced by their use of an interactive story focused on sparking interest in probability and providing opportunities for learning this mathematical topic. A scale of attitudes towards probability and its teaching was applied to 40 prospective primary school teachers, before and after reading the book. This instrument was implemented with two focus groups. Preliminary results revealed significant changes in pre-service teachers’ attitudes, particularly in their feelings towards probability. This evidence attested to the potential of the book, especially considering that the participants had only studied the basics of this topic in previous courses

    Connecting statistics education and sustainability: beliefs of Primary Education teachers

    Currently, teachers are being challenged to integrate sustainability into school classrooms in various disciplines, and the statistics education is not immune to this trend. Against this backdrop, in this work we investigate the belief system of 11 Chilean primary education teachers who are active in statistics education and its links with sustainability. To this end, we conducted semi-structured interviews and analyzed them using a qualitative methodology under an interpretive approach. The results show that teach-ers acknowledge the integration of statistics education and sustainability as a challenge, identifying as the most recurring topics their mastery of content and the development of skills.

    Toma de decisiones del profesorado al enseñar estadística y probabilidad

    En este estudio se analizan las Prácticas de Instrucción (PI) de un docente chileno que realiza clases de estadística y probabilidad en tercer año medio (entre 15 y 17 años). Para ello, se utiliza el enfoque de estudio de caso, ya que se analiza la particularidad de un docente bajo una metodología cualitativa de enfoque interpretativo. La primera etapa consiste en grabar todas las clases de la unidad, para posteriormente seleccionar 9 video viñetas con una duración de entre 0:22 y 1:50 minutos enmarcados enlos esquemas de interacción de las PI. Se aplicó una entrevista semi-estructurada, para su análisis se utilizaron las transcripciones usando la perspectiva de la Teoría Fundamentada, desarrollando codificación abierta, axial y selectiva. Los principales resultados logran evidenciar las etapas por la que el docente pasa para llegar a tomar una decisión y como cada una de esas características se transforma en una PI como interacción entre el profesor, estudiante y contenido, siendo también alguno de ellos enlace para las PI posibles. Sin embargo, para relacionar la interpretación y la decisión, el profesor alude a su campo profesional que se limita a la experiencia del profesor estableciendo familias de acciones.
