This research examines how fear, in the digital environment, acts as a factor of change in professional practices and in the relationship of journalists with audiences and sources. Through 91 in-depth interviews, it identifies the transformations and repercussions of this evolution and the role that fear plays in audience attraction practices such as clickbait; in actions to protect journalists such as self-censorship and anonymity, as well as the emergence of new reporting dynamics such as the “selfie recorded testimonial”.

(2022) Alarcón Luco, Muriel Constanza; Ortega Gunckel, Constanza; Grassau, Daniela

Is There Room for Connective Democracy Within the Discussions About a New Constitution on Social Media? The Case of Chile in the Months Leading Up to the 2020 Plebiscite.
(2025) López Escarcena, Ignacio; Ortega Gunckel, Constanza; Gronemeyer, María Elena
In October 2019, widespread protests began in Chile after the government announced an increase in transport fare, which gave way to several social demands. A month later, politicians from different sectors reached an understanding that would open the possibility of writing a new Constitution. Two clear sides emerged: those in favor (Approve) and those against (Reject) the new constitutional project, which would be voted on in a plebiscite in October 2020. In this article, we examine the extent to which this period in Chile involved feelings of dislike or even hatred toward those who think differently, a key element of affective polarization, an increasing phenomenon that sparked the emergence of the concept of connective democracy. The study focuses on the reactions on X/Twitter and YouTube to four TV programs (Tolerancia cero, Pauta libre, A esta hora se improvisa, and Estado nacional) that broadcasted political discussions in the months before the 2020 plebiscite. Our methodology is a qualitative textual analysis, which shows that even though the comments include both negative outparty feelings and negative trait perceptions, as well as positive, informative, and hybrid comments, this does not drift them away from connective democracy. On the contrary, connective democracy still values this type of exchanges, as they allow us to reflect on how the quality and interactions of these connections can be improved.

PARENT AND SCHOOL MEDIATION: USE OF TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE SCHOOL PERFORMANCE
(UNIV NACIONAL EDUCACION DISTANCIA, 2021) Halpern, Daniel; Pina, Martina; Ortega Gunckel, Constanza
With the massive assimilation of new digital platforms in the educational world, in which several users can generate content simultaneously, collaborate by integrating different sources and consume this information according to their own preferences and needs, knowing how to control and choose the appropriate channels for their learning processes has become increasingly relevant Answering to the call of various experts to teach about the use of technologies at home and school for educational purposes, this research aims to: 1) Identify the impact of parental and school mediation on academic performance, 2) Observe the relationship between study tools and school performance, and 3) Explain the reasons behind the results obtained. For this purpose, a mixed-methods research was carried out, applying a questionnaire to more than 7000 Chilean students aged 12 to 18 years, and interviews with 14 specialists in the field of education. The study yielded three main results: firstly, it showed that parental mediation at home has a much greater impact -on the use of technologies and academic performance- than mediation carried out in schools. Secondly, it was observed that students who use YouTube as a study tool have a lower school performance than students who use their notebook notes. Thirdly, we identified difficulties and challenges in the implementation of ICT in the classroom. Thus, this work acquires special relevance by contributing to how to influence the practices of ICT use in an educational system that has had to adapt to the online modality.

(2023) Grassau, Daniela; Ortega Gunckel, Constanza; Puente Vergara, María Soledad

Political Discussion on Television in Times of Elections: A Promise of Pluralism Social Media Users Hardly Recognize
(2022) López Escarcena, Ignacio; Ortega Gunckel, Constanza; Gronemeyer Forni, Maria Elena
In this research, we set out to analyze, on the one hand, the promises of pluralism of four television channels in the months before the referendum of October 25th, 2020, in Chile, and on the other hand, how YouTube and Twitter audiences reacted to them. Through a mixed method of content analysis and qualitative analysis, we found that pluralism was not one of the most mentioned aspects by the public in these social media. When there were allusions to it, the assessment was negative. This article seeks to contribute to studies on pluralism not only in Chile but also at a more general level, focusing on a global phenomenon, such as the possibilities of participation that social media provide to audiences who consume journalistic content

The Representation of Women in Chilean Advertising: Changes and Continuities in the Context of the Establishment of a Consumer Culture (1980–2013)
(Springer, 2024) Porath Campos, William; Vergara Leyton, Enrique; Labarca, Claudia; Gómez Lorenzini, María Paulina; Ortega Gunckel, Constanza
This paper comparatively analyses the representation of women in Chilean print advertising in 1980 and 2013, years that represent the beginning and consolidation of a modernisation process, in which consumption became one of the main axes of social life and advertising, a major actor in the public space. Notwithstanding the far-reaching process of modernisation and the major transformations in Chilean society, advertisements in 2013 still depict stereotypical gender representations. For example, women assume passive roles that do not reflect their growing independence as a result of their integration into the labour market.
