    Intervening on heritage is never simple. Even if the desire for transformation exists -as this winning competition entry from 2018 will recall- it can be impaired by administrative problems or lack of investors willing to subsume the financial risk. In their project for Castillo Hidalgo -a historic monument located atop a historic hill in the center of Santiago- de la Cerda, Izquierdo and Nunez ration demolitions but intervene decidedly over the building and its site. Thus, reminding us that transformation is about re-making connections: between existing and proposed buildings, with the hill's current system of walkways and lookouts, but also with its past programs, reimagined from the contemporary demands of its location

    STRUCTURAL NOTIONS

    Structure is what allows something to endure. That is probably why the word is equally useful for buildings or ideas: in the former, structure is what allows them to stand upright while in the latter is that which allows organizing the arguments. However, there are examples - such as those on this selection - where both notions go hand in hand: when an idea on structure is materialized in a physical construction.
