Si bien se reconocen como importantes los aspectos centrales de este debate, se cuestiona su tendencia a homogenizar las ciudades intermedias. Por el contrario, se plantea que es necesario comprender las ciudades intermedias desde las practicas socio-espaciales, en donde la definición de lugar asoma como elemental para entender las dinámicas de intermediación y la unicidad de cada una de estas ciudades. El área de estudio es la región de La Araucanía de Chile, específicamente las ciudades de Angol, Victoria y Villarrica. A partir de atributos claves de la condición de lugar propuestos por Massey (2012), se examinan empíricamente prácticas y tensiones socio-espaciales constitutivas de las dinámicas de intermediación. Este acercamiento aporta en una comprensión de las ciudades intermedias y sus respectivos procesos de intermediación de forma más apropiada y poco desarrollado en la literatura especializada

- ItemEtnografía de las prácticas sociales y negociaciones en la política indígena actual, Araucanía-Chile(2012) De La Maza Cabrera, Francisca AntoniaEl artículo presenta un análisis de la política indígena chilena actual desde una investigación etnográfica en la Región de la Araucanía, que comprende parte del territorio tradicional del pueblo mapuche. El enfoque es la etnografía del estado que busca mirar el Estado “desde dentro” y en el espacio local, en particular, en la oficina que atiende a la población indígena. El rol del funcionario indígena es fundamental para la comprensión de la política pública en la práctica y la acción, como el depositario f inal del poder estatal. Uno de los principales motivos de la interacción es la solicitud de la “calidad de indígena”, certificación que da el Estado chileno para la postulación a beneficios sociales. Se analizan las prácticas sociales y la forma de “negociar” esta “calidad” en el espacio local y las formas de construcción del Estado y su impacto en el reconocimiento de la identidad indígena.

Carnivore species are particularly affected by fragmentation and the resulting resource use conflicts with humans. This study aimed at understanding values and human-animal relationships with negatively perceived threatened carnivores through the disclosure of local stories and Mapuche traditional folktales. Methods Our mixed approach comprised the qualitative analysis of 112 stories on the kodkod cat (Leopardus guigna) and the puma (Puma concolor) collected by students (9-14 years) from 28 schools in the Araucania region within their family contexts, 10 qualitative in-depth interviews with indigenous Mapuche people, 35 traditional Mapuche legends, and the significance of naming found in ethnographic collections. Results We revealed a quasi-extinction of traditional tales in the current knowledge pool about pumas and kodkods, local anecdotes, however, were present in significant numbers. Values associated to both felids were manifold, ranging from negativistic to positive values. While pumas played an important role in people’s spirituality, negative mythological connotations persisted in kodkod stories. Four prominent relationships were derived: (1) Both felids represent threats to livestock, pumas even to life, (2) both felids are symbols for upcoming negative events, (3) pumas are spiritual creatures, and (4) kodkods are threatened by humans.
