- ItemReagent efficiency and analytical sensitivity optimization for a reliable SARS-CoV-2 pool-based testing strategy(2025) Miranda Marín, José Patricio; Osorio J.; Silva M.; Silva C.; Madrid V.; Camponovo R.; Henríquez Henríquez, MarcelaBackground: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic caused millions of infections worldwide. Among the strategies for effective containment, frequent and massive testing was fundamental. Although sample pooling allows multiplying the installed analysis capacity, the definition of the number of samples to include in a pool is commonly guided more by economic parameters than analytical quality. Methods: We developed a mathematical model to determine the pooling conditions that maximize reagent efficiency and analytical sensitivity. We evaluated 30 samples individually and in 2-sample to 12-sample pools. Using Passing Bablok regressions, we estimated the shift of Ct values in the RT-qPCR reaction for each pool size. With this Ct shift, we estimated sensitivity in the context of the distribution of 1,030 individually evaluated positive samples. Findings: Our results showed that the most significant gain in efficiency occurred in the 4-sample pool, while at pools greater than 8-sample, there was no considerable reagent savings. Sensitivity significantly dropped to 87.18 %–92.52 % for a 4-sample pool and reached as low as 77.09 %–80.87 % in a 12-sample pooling. Conclusions: Our results suggest that a 4-sample pooling maximizes reagent efficiency and analytical sensitivity. These considerations are essential to increase testing capacity and efficiently detect and contain contagious.

This guideline suggests the management of mother and child infection, its diagnostic and therapeutic options. Considers the global and Latin American epidemiology, with recommendations for clinical and laboratory evaluation; diagnostic criteria, therapeutic approaches according to the clinical situation, analyzes prevention measures and establishes a national proposal for monitoring this disease.
- ItemSARS-CoV-2 infection in people living with HIV. Topics on the global panorama and in ChileInfección por SARS-CoV-2 en personas viviendo con VIH. Tópicos del panorama mundial y en Chile(2022) Silva M.; Blamey R.; Ceballos M.E.; Araya X.; Bastias C.; Sciaraffia A.; Twele L.; Munoz R.; Pinera C.© 2022, Sociedad Chilena de Infectologia. All rights reserved. The COVID-19 disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and was declared a pandemic by the WHO on March 11, 2020. To date, more than 500 million people have been infected and it has caused over 6 million deaths worldwide. People that belong to the most vulnerable risk groups, such as those at the extremes of life, patients with chronic comorbidities and those with severe immunosuppression, are especially susceptible to developing a severe form of COVID-19 infection and death. Subjects living with HIV, especially those in precarious immunological conditions or those in whom antiretroviral therapy is yet to be started, may be at risk of developing complications related to COVID-19, as observed with other infectious diseases. This review aims to determine the magnitude of the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 virus on people living with HIV in Chile.
- ItemTime management in 12 Chilean kindergarten classrooms: Recess, snack and a little teachingGestión del tiempo en 12 salas Chilenas de kindergarten: Recreo, colación y algo de instrucción(2009) Strasser K.; Lissi M.; Silva M.This study examined time management in 12 kindergarten classrooms from 9 Chilean schools with diverse sources of funding and socioeconomic status (SES). We conducted 33 observations in the 12 classrooms (average duration 197 minutes), and determined the amount of time devoted to different activities. More than half of the time in these classrooms was spent in non-instructional activities such as recess, snack, and managing the children's behavior. Additionally, the distribution of instructional time is not in accordance with current findings regarding the activities that are more fruitful for children's development. These results are independent of the schools' source of funding and SES. © 2009.
