- ItemGeografías del comercio: En Santiago de Chile (1990-2010): De la reestructuración comercial al policentrismo inmobiliario(2016) Hidalgo, Rodrigo; Santana, Daniel; Arenas, Federico; Simone Polania, Rosa Liliana deLos debates sobre la reestructuración de las áreas comerciales y del consumo en las metrópolis latinoamericanas se han centrado tanto en la experiencia urbana como en el carácter morfológico de las mismas. Por lo tanto, el objetivo del artículo es proponer una línea de investigación alternativa que busca recomponer la relación entre las transformaciones de las áreas comerciales en Santiago de Chile entre 1990 y 2010 y las dinámicas de reestructuración inmobiliaria que se expresan en dicha ciudad. De esa manera se encontró, mediante un análisis de formas, funciones y estructuras de distintas áreas comerciales —galerías, pasajes, protomalls y malls— como la actividad del consumo es central para comprender las dinámicas de metropolización y renovación del área central de la ciudad, por lo que el impulso a ciertas modalidades como los mall se enmarcan en estrategias de urbanización claramente identificables que implican, no sólo la promoción de ciertos valores sino su reapropiación alternativa por parte de diferentes grupos sociales.
- ItemNew neoliberal public housing policies: between centrality discourse and peripheralization practices in Santiago, Chile(2019) Hidalgo, Rodrigo; Santana, Daniel; Link, FelipeThe lack of geographical equality in the development of neoliberal social housing models is evidence of differing ideological discourses and socio-spatial practices in the production of social housing. Based on a critical analysis of the Housing Policy for Quality Improvement and Social Integration promoted in Chile in 2006the basis for a set of subsequent policiesthis study seeks to identify the link between state discourse promoting further urban centralization of social housing and neoliberal subsidy allocation practices that have shaped the geography of recent residential production (2007-2012). Using an ideological critique and a descriptive spatial analysis to assess the notions of urban centrality, we found that equality and integration form the rhetoric used to legitimize and reproduce practices that lead to peripheralization of the poor. These practices are not limited to the city but have expanded to the extended urban area, creating a larger niche for the real estate industry.

The aim of this article is to analyze how production processes of utopolis became distopolis through negative socio-spatial effects in the central coast of Chile between 1992 and 2012. Two stages are identified in the process: an earlier expansion of the secondary housing and another one of building main housing with great spatial integration and a strong process of urban sprawl in the central urban macrozone of Chile.
