    Urban transport, urban expansion and institutions and governance in Santiago, Chile

    This case study examines the relationship between urban development and transportation in Santiago, Chile, highlighting both positive changes and persistent challenges. Santiago's urban growth has outpaced population growth, driven by income increases and policies promoting social housing in outlying areas. Since the 1990s, improvements in transportation included new bus regulations, highway construction via public-private partnerships, and the introduction of the Transantiago bus rapid transit system. Despite technical and institutional capacity, implementation has been hampered by coordination issues and a lack of coherence between transport services and urban context.
