- ItemCombined Cycle Unit Controllers Modification for Improved Primary Frequency Regulation(IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 2010) Carmona, Sergio; Rios, Sebastian; Pena, Hector; Raineri, Ricardo; Nakic, GoranDuring the past few decades the combined cycle unit dynamics and its associated controllers have become an important research subject. It has now become necessary to understand the operation and existing control strategies for such combined cycle units; this of course is if we are to undertake a comprehensive evaluation of their performance under system disturbance status. This paper focuses on the frequency regulation performance. Its main contention is that an improvement of the control strategies will 1) ensure a better dynamic response to typical system contingencies, 2) deliver a better primary frequency regulation, and 3) maintain the internal machine variables within safe operational levels. The proposed control strategies were applied over the IEEE 14-bus system and our readings showed that modifications of the control strategies do influence better primary frequency regulation responses of the combined cycle unit within limits of a safe operation of the electric system and unit alike.
- ItemFrom a bundled energy-capacity pricing model to an energy-capacity-ancillary services pricing model(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2008) Raineri, Ricardo; Arce, Rau; Rios, Sebastian; Salamanca, CarlosIn this paper, we extend the Chilean power generation pricing mechanism, with capacity and energy payments, to one where ancillary services (AS), as frequency regulation and voltage control, are explicitly recognized. Adequacy and security attributes of the electric system and the public good characteristics of AS are set within the payment structure to distribute the financing of AS among those who benefit from their provision. The contribution to finance the provision of AS is determined assessing the value assigned to the system security by each agent, following what's an efficient pricing mechanism in the presence of public goods. - ItemIntegrating Large Wind Farms into Transmission Planning of Hydrothermal System(ASCE-AMER SOC CIVIL ENGINEERS, 2009) Raby, Mauricio; Rios, Sebastian; Jerardino, Samuel; Raineri, RicardoThis paper is aimed at presenting a methodology leading to the incorporation of large wind farms to the transmission planning of hydrothermal systems. We resorted to a simulation program for an optimum operation of a generation-transmission system based on stochastic dual dynamic programming and incorporated the wind energy features as well as undertook the simulations. This work was applied to an existing hydrothermal system; chiefly for evaluating the wind farm impact in three specific areas: the network expansion, the energy cost, and the effect on the reservoir water level.
