Discourses of endometriosis in Chile: applying topic modeling to critical discourse analysis
(2025) Quintanilla Urrutia, Francisca; Pascual, Mariana; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Facultad de Letras
Endometriosis is a chronic condition often overlooked despite its pervasive effects on the daily lives of those who suffer it. This oversight is not only attributable to the challenges associated with its diagnosis but also due to broader sociocultural factors, such as misinformation and the normalization of pain related to menstruation (Mikesell and Bontempo 2023). This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Topic Modeling (TM) in identifying nuanced topics within two corpora related to endometriosis. Specifically, a dataset of autobiographical narratives and a national technical guide were analyzed using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. The results indicate a divergence between the biomedical framing of the illness in institutional discourses in contrast to the psychosocial factors present in patients’ narratives. These findings underscore the potential value of integrating patients’ experiences into health communication and care strategies.
