    Verbs meaning “be silent” in biblical Hebrew can refer to a failure to act as expected, just as verbs meaning “hear” can refer to compliance and obedience. The semantic fields of SILENCE and HEARING, therefore, not only contain sensory domain verbs related to auditory perception (or lack thereof) but also extend into the domain of ACTION, including the performance of social obligations. In this article I explore the ACTION component of both semantic fields and argue that they create a “mirror image” of each other, suggesting that our own perceptions can be incorrectly conditioned by target-language semantic frameworks and boundaries.
