- ItemTHE PIECES AND THE BOARD: THE EMERGENCY OF A NEW CATHEDRAL IN SANTIAGO DURING THE XVIII CENTURY(UNIV DIEGO PORTALES, 2017) Perez Oyarzun, FernandoThe article focuses on the construction of a new cathedral in Santiago de Chile during the mid-18th century, to replace the one existing until then. Considered a significant episode in the history of Chilean colonial architecture, the new cathedral exhibited functional, technical and representative conditions, which diverge from the one that had preceded it. The article seeks to highlight the dimension and meaning of this urban and architectural operation, made evident in the change of orientation, the dimensions and the internal organization of the new building. At the same time, it refers to the relationship of the new temple with its urban context. The proposed hypothesis is that the decision of building of a new cathedral responded, in addition to economical and ecclesiastical reasons, to the 18th century urban conditions and to the will of getting a new urban presence of the Church. Both its building features, as well as those of a representative character, propose a new relationship between the temple and the city. This was possible due to the cultural, economic and technical development happened during the second half of the 18th century in Chile, and can be related to more general reforms promoted by the Spanish Empire.
- ItemTHE VALUE OF TRANSFORMING: Academic building, Faculty of Arts, Oriente campus(PONTIFICIA UNIV CATOLICA CHILE, ESCUELA ARQUITECTURA, 2017) Perez Oyarzun, Fernando; Quintanilla Chala, JoseAn intervention on a heritage building can either increase or ruin its value. Architecture has that power. The fear of affecting the value of what already exists leads many to opt for mimesis. However, such an obvious alternative is not the only one. This building shows that, by means of a careful interpretation of the existing, an intervention can add value to heritage without the need to formally duplicate it.
