A Review of FACTS' Practical Consideration and Economic Evaluation
(IEEE, 2009) Ren, H.; Watts Casimis, David; Mi, Z.; Lu, J.; Mi, Zengqiang; Lu, Jinling
Flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) and their controllers are of great interest today. FACTS controllers can offer great opportunities in modern power system, allowing better and safer operation of the grid. Their technical benefits are very well acknowledged, but there are some factors limiting the widespread of this technology: a) lack of a comprehensive consideration of FACTS for multiple operational problems and operational conditions, b) lack of economic assessment of FACTS projects for utilities and transmission entities [1] c) lack of a clear understanding of the options of devices and their configurations [1], and most importantly d) the high degree of uncertainty associated with the transmission system on the time scale that is needed to assess this kind of long-term projects. This paper gives a brief introduction of various FACTS devices and their controllers, main research methods. We mainly provide a survey of FACTS' economic assessment method proposed so far. We conclude that there is a huge literature body of technical benefits associated with FACTS targeting on single operational problems, but limited work on addressing their practical application considerations, and economic evaluation, offering great research opportunities.

Sustainability evaluation in power system related applications - A review
    (IEEE, 2016) Sun, C.; Mi, Z.; H. Ren, H.; Lu, J.; Chen, Q.; Watts Casimis, David; Zhang, L.
Recently lots of new technologies are introduced at the distribution level, and the distribution system is facing challenges on technology and management during reforming toward an Active Distribution System. The sustainability evaluation (SE) fits the new era better than the conventional reliability and economic evaluation. In this regard, by reviewing recent works on sustainability evaluation, the paper summarizes and compares the common components of SE at various levels, such as energy system, power system planning and management, rural electrification, and generation technologies. Solutions on special issues are reviewed, including unbalanced development among various dimensions, the correlations among indicators, the verification of the aggregated sustainability indices, and the significance of different dimensions. The interaction among components which consist of the system and the different periodic changes that each components experience make the development of the system dynamic and nonlinear. Dynamic system approach could capture the complexity that the system demonstrates and be applicable for SE. The dynamic system approach based SE will be a good complement for indicator based SE.

The long-term effect of incentives on the development of DGPV considering the interaction among DGPVs' investors and distribution system
(IEEE, 2017) Sun, C.; Ren, H.; Mi, Z.; Li, K.; Watts Casimis, David; Zhou, J.
The paper proposes a simulation method to study the long-term effect of incentives on the development of DGPV by considering the interaction among investors and the distribution network. An investment model of DGPV is proposed to study the investment capacity affected by state subsidy, subsidy from distribution network depending on the benefit from integration, and the population and the income level of the city. The simulation is performed based on the weather condition and population of Beijing area scaled according to the IEEE-13 test system. Simulation results show that under the current benefit structure, in order to reach the same effect of the state subsidy on the development of DGPV in 10 years, the subsidy from distribution system can only replace 52% of the state subsidy, and it can only be effective after the integration capacity of DGPV reaches a certain scale.
