A family outreach intervention for engaging young out-of-treatment drug users: Pre- versus post-treatment comparison
(2013) Santis, Rodrigo; Gloria Hidalgo, Carmen; Jaramillo, Andrea; Hayden, Viviana; Armijo, Ivan; Lasagna, Andrea
Only a small fraction of drug users worldwide enter treatment each year. We evaluated the efficacy of a systemic family outreach intervention (SFOI) for young, untreated drug users, using a quasi-experimental design in which the experimental group (EG) received SFOI and the control group (CG) received traditional outreach work (OW). Both pre- and post-treatment, we administered the Addiction Severity Index-6 (ASI-6), the Family Environment Scale (FES), and tests of parental practices and risky behavior. Post-treatment, there was a fivefold improvement on the ASI-6 and a significant worsening on the conflict sub-scale of the FES in the EG as compared with the CG. SFOI was more efficacious than OW in reducing drug use in the drug user's home environment. The increased conflict in the EG might be explained by parents' increased awareness of abnormal behaviors and implementation of strategies to protect their children.
Psychosocial support programs focus their work in the relation established between intervention agents and participants. Theoretical literature highlights the importance of this relationship and agents' characteristics, as well as empirical studies show its link with the intervention effects. However, those are generic characterizations, without deepening in participants' diversity, and based on pre-established variables that do not consider participants' experiences. The objective of this study was to analyze, from the perspective of two Chilean psychosocial programs participants, the relation with their intervention agents and its influence in the implementation and effects of the social programs, taking into account their vulnerability level. Twelve interviews were done, analyzed using the Grounded Theory. We identified positive and negative experiences related to the psychosocial support given by the intervention agents, and different changes, occurring that for people in greater vulnerability, emotional support acted as a crucial mean to receive technical support. We conclude that is relevant that intervention agents can adequate themselves to participants' particular profiles.

Changing Communities and Increases in the Prevalence of Depression: is there a Relationship?
(2015) Krause, Mariane; Gueell, Pedro; Jaramillo, Andrea; Zilveti, Maya; Pablo Jimenez, Juan; Luyten, Patrick
The article analyses the impact of individualization processes on community-level determinants of health in postmodern societies, taking depression as an example. The analysis shows how the evolution of the broader social context towards forms of organization focused on the individual and on competition in a market economy implies the vanishing of traditional communities and therefore of their health-supportive functions, thus endangering their ability to fulfill the needs of belonging, mutual support, and identity. The analysis also relates this evolution to cultural phenomena and to recent studies about culture-gene coevolution, implying that the effects of community decline are expected to be even greater in collectivist societies. Through its multidimensional conceptual analysis, this paper aims to contribute to further uncovering the interactions of psychological, psychosocial, and biological factors in mental health.

(2023) Daher Gray, Marianne; Campero, María José; Rosati Bustamante, Antonia Andrea; Jaramillo, Andrea
Entrepreneurship has become a prominent strategy for overcoming poverty, but fewstudies have identified the specificities of different entrepreneurial configurations inindigenous contexts. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze positive effects and theirrelationship with participants’ profiles of entrepreneurial programs, from the experiencesand meanings of Mapuche people (mostly women) in poverty and social vulnerabilitysituation in rural and urban contexts. A qualitative study was conducted in rural and urbanareas considering a total of 19 respondents. Results focus on woman experiences showingthree types of Mapuche entrepreneur women profiles (fighter, submissive and reluctant)and their trajectories in entrepreneurship programs, considering their responses to theirbackground, their relationship with the program and profile-specific positive effects.

Saving as a Path for Female Empowerment and Entrepreneurship in Rural Peru
(2021) Daher Gray, Marianne; Rosati Bustamante, Antonia; Jaramillo, Andrea
Much research has identified the difficulties of promoting women's empowerment using microcredit, but there has been little research on the potential for empowerment from promoting women's savings. We address this gap through a qualitative study of three women's savings programmes in the Highlands of Peru. The results reveal changes in several domains of women's lives (economic, personal and relational), emphasizing that these programmes enable them to think about the future, expand their social support networks, and become entrepreneurs. We conclude that savings interventions have considerable advantage over microcredit programmes for facilitating female empowerment and that the merits of these interventions go far beyond financial inclusion with significant impacts on women's psychosocial well-being and broader empowerment.
