Companies have become aware of these improvements and are demanding students well formed in Lean concepts. However, to meet this demand, universities must adapt their curricula to include courses that use alternative teaching methods to connect to real contexts. This paper seeks to analyze the benefits of lecture- and game-based learning for developing students' understanding of Lean Construction Principles. A case study is carried out in the "Lean Construction" course of the Master of Planning and Management in Civil Engineering of the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia. A combination of a traditional lecture and three simple games is applied. Descriptive statistics, the Mann-Whitney U-test, and the Wilcoxon test are performed to analyze the impact of each activity on the understanding of each Lean Construction Principle. Results highlight the importance of combining the lecture class with multiple games to effectively impart knowledge about Lean principles and their application in the construction industry. In addition, they emphasize the importance of selecting the game according to the Lean principle to be taught.
- ItemPredicting construction schedule performance with last planner system and machine learning(2024) Lagos, Camilo I.; Herrera, Rodrigo F.; Cawley, Alejandro F. Mac; Alarcon, Luis F.Construction project schedules deviate due to uncertainty and variability unless timely actions are implemented. While the limitations of traditional management practices help to facilitate such assessments have been widely covered, quantitative LPS research has shown empirical relations between its indicators, performance, and outcome. This paper creates a model to predict the schedule outcome during early execution using the LPS metrics and the Design Science approach. 18 solution artifacts were evaluated to predict three schedule outcome variables using 15 indicators in 1464 sample points collected from nine subsequent execution intervals from 164 projects. The selected artifact predicted the schedule outcome, which is a combination of the schedule performance at planned completion and the actual schedule deviation at completion, with a MAE of 1.24% and R2 = 0.96 averaged across the nine execution intervals, using solely LPS indicators. The model can be applied as an early warning mechanism in LPS IT-Support software.
- ItemValue generation analysis within the design process of construction projects in Chile(2024) Gimenez, Zulay; Herrera, Rodrigo F.; Sanchez, OmarValue generation occurs during the life cycle of construction projects. However, the ability to influence the projects' characteristics at the design stage increases the probability of maximizing value. Nevertheless, few studies assess value creation during the design. Considering this gap, the aim of this paper is to analyze the value generated at the design stage of Chilean construction projects. The research method responds to a descriptive type of study consisting of three stages: design value attributes definition, assessment and quantitative measurement of value applying a Value Analysis Model recently developed, and value comparison. Twenty-eight value attributes were selected from literature review and grouped into seven satisfaction conditions. The value assessment was performed through a questionnaire applied to 47 Chilean companies within the construction industry. The main findings show that 1) companies, in general, have low-value expectations related to the design process and, in turn, low-value generation, which can be negatives values; 2) projects tend to compensate the lack of indispensable attributes with the inclusion of attractive features, thereby demonstrating an absence of prioritization; and 3) the satisfaction conditions with the highest value generation are business environment, schedule and budget, and with lowest value generated are deliverables, integration and tools and technology. The primary contribution of this study is be useful to designers, managers and researchers, as it provides information on focus attributtes that require appropriate care to improve value within design-build processes; and for any project or company wanting to know its value benchmarking concerning other projects.
