Los casos de Cartago, Cesarea y Alejandría(2024) Fernández, SamuelEl presente artículo comienza con unas advertencias metodológicas acerca de las fuentes, luego presenta las elecciones episcopales en Cartago y, más en general, en el África Proconsular, sobre la base del rico epistolario de Cipriano. Luego, teniendo en cuenta algunas homilías de Orígenes, predicadas en Palestina, y algún testimonio transmitido por Eusebio, se reconstruyen algunos elementos de la elección de los obispos en Cesarea Marítima, la capital de la provincia romana de Palestina. En tercer lugar, se estudia Alejandría y su influjo en todo Egipto con la ayuda de fuentes dispersas y retrospectivas, pero que coinciden en algunas constantes. Por último, se abordan algunos elementos del significado que la elecciones episcopales tenían para las iglesias cristianas.

- ItemMarcellus and Eusebius on the Gospel of John in De ecclesiastica theologia(2018) Fernández, SamuelThis article aims to study the debate between Marcellus of Ancyra and Eusebius of Caesareaon the interpretation of the Gospel of John, as relected in De ecclesiastica theologia. Weirst examine Marcellus’ and Eusebius’ interpretation of John 10:30, 10:38, and 14:9. We thenproceed to examine their exegeses of John 1:1, which provides the foundation for their interpretivedifferences. We conclude that the main difference between Marcellus and Eusebius,each of whom represents a different theological tradition, is the way they understand the termλόγος in the Prologue of the Gospel of John.

- ItemOrigen’s Theological System in On First Principles: A Reconsideration of its Nature, Rationale, and Outline(WILEY, 2021) Fernández, SamuelThis article aims to reconsider Origen's theological system in the light of his treatise On First Principles. Was Origen a systematic thinker? If so, what kind of systematicity characterised his theology? Since the reception of the treatise was marked by theological quarrels, it is not possible to isolate its theology from the problems related to the transmission of the text. Therefore, the first part of the article tackles the text of On First Principles (I). The second part studies the structure, addressees and aim of the treatise; the paper then moves on to a discussion of the nature of Origen's systematic thinking, and an analysis of the pre-existence of the soul to disclose the theological rationale lying behind On First Principles (II). Finally, the article outlines the theology of the treatise with a special focus on the two main features of Origen's systematic thinking: its aspiration to reach coherence and comprehensiveness. To grasp the deep consistency of Origen's thought, it is necessary to contemplate the history of salvation as a whole (III).
