- ItemConsiderations of a high repitition Capillary Discharge operated in nitrogen as a water-window X-ray microscope source(IEEE, 2009) Wyndham, Edmund; Favre Domínguez, Mario; Valdivia, M. P.; Valenzuela Ahumada, Julio CésarThe capillary discharge is a very bright radiation source. When operated as a ns discharge at a peak current of order 10 kA and at a high repetition rate of order 200 Hz a very bright source at 13.5 nm is obtained. We present a series of observations that will extend the use of the discharge as a source of He-like nitrogen emission at 2.89 nm as a possible source for a water window soft X-ray microscope. A successful source depends on intense axial electron beams generated by the transient hollow cathode mechanism. These e-beams greatly enhance the plasma X-ray emission above that of a quasi Maxwellian distribution. Crucial to the practical realization of such a source is extremely low inductance geometry, effective heat removal and a ceramic wall and electrode heat loading that avoids ablation and impurities in the plasma. Observations of the time resolved optical spectrum from both ends of the plasma together with filtered X-ray diodes and a Faraday cup permit the verification of model parameters and also verify whether the wall loading is not evaporating the surface. Four capillary lengths and internal diameters are explored. Furthermore the electrical circuit based on low cost IGBT's is presented and a drive configuration that minimizes transformer magnetization losses that in other configurations is deposited in the plasma causing wall evaporation and contamination due to damped current oscillations over a period well after the main plasma discharge.

- ItemExperimental investigations of hotspots in a low energy plasma focus operating in hydrogen-argon mixtures(IEEE, 1998) Favre Domínguez, Mario; Silva, P.; Choi, P.; Chuaqui, Hernán; Dumitrescu-Zoita, C.; Wyndham, EdmundWe present experimental results on the investigation of hotspot formation in PFP-I, a small 3.8 kJ plasma focus device operating in hydrogen-argon mixtures, at pressures from below 0.2 torr upward. A combination of multipinhole and slit-wire X-ray photography is used to measure the characteristic size and temperature of the hotspots, over a range of pressure and gas mixing ratios. Filtered p-i-n diodes and a beam-target detector are used to investigate the time evolution of the hotspots. Typical size for the hottest emitting region, at temperatures between 200 and 400 eV, is found to be around 150 /spl mu/m, with a typical duration of the high temperature phase of the order of 10 ns. In general, the temperature in the final phase of the time evolution of the hotspots reaches values which are nearly twice those of the plasma column where they are formed. Characteristic size of the hotspots is about half of that of the initial plasma column.

- ItemProperties of hot-spots in Plasma Focus discharges operating in Hydrogen-gas mixtures(IEEE, 2002) Silva Zuñiga, Hector Patricio; Favre Domínguez, MarioWe have investigated the properties of hotspots formed in low energy Plasma Focus discharges operating in Hydrogen-Argon mixtures, at 140 kA current level. The results show that best conditions for reproducible and localized hotspot formation are obtained by adjusting the base pressure in such a way that the mass load allows the time of first radial collapse to coincide with peak current. When the Plasma Focus is operated with 20% Argon content, rather uniform hotspots, of 115 µm characteristic size and 300 eV characteristic temperature, are produced with a better than 80% reproducibility in their axial localization. A significant fraction of the radiation is emitted in the 3.2 to 3.88 keV region, corresponding to Kα emission from highly ionized Argon.
