    Automatic knowledge-graph creation from historical documents: The Chilean dictatorship as a case study

    We present our results regarding the construction of a knowledge graph from historical documents related to the Chilean dictatorship period (1973-1990). Our approach uses LLMs to automatically recognize entities and relations between them and resolve conflicts between these values. To prevent hallucination, the interaction with the LLM is grounded in a simple ontology with four types of entities and seven types of relations. To evaluate our architecture, we use a gold standard graph constructed using a small subset of the documents, and compare this to the graph obtained from our approach when processing the same set of documents. Results show that the automatic construction manages to recognize a good portion of all the entities in the gold standard and that those not recognized are explained mainly by the level of granularity in which the information is structured in the graph and not because the automatic approach misses an important entity in the graph. Looking forward, we expect this report to encourage work on other similar projects focused on enhancing research in humanities and social science. However, we remark that better evaluation metrics are needed to accurately fine-tune these types of architectures.

    Gender, age and geographical representation over the past 50 years of schizophrenia research

    Previous studies have suggested that subjects participating in schizophrenia research are not representative of the demographics of the global population of people with schizophrenia, particularly in terms of gender and geographical location. We here explored if this has evolved throughout the decades, examining changes in geographical location, gender and age of participants in studies of schizophrenia published in the last 50 years. We examined this using a meta-analytical approach on an existing database including over 3,000 studies collated for another project. We found that the proportion of studies and participants from low-and-middle income countries has significantly increased over time, with considerable input from studies from China. However, it is still low when compared to the global population they represent. Women have been historically underrepresented in studies, and still are in high-income countries. However, a significantly higher proportion of female participants have been included in studies over time. The age of participants included has not changed significantly over time. Overall, there have been improvements in the geographical and gender representation of people with schizophrenia. However, there is still a long way to go so research can be representative of the global population of people with schizophrenia, particularly in geographical terms.

    The arrival of the populist radical right in Chile José Antonio Kast and the "Partido Republicano"

    Despite the increasing influence of populist radical right (PRR) forces at the global level, they have been absent in Chile until very recently. Today, however, the conditions seem to be ripe for the consolidation of the PRR in the country. As we show in this contribution, Jose Antonio Kast and the Partido Republicano advance a programmatic agenda that emphasizes authoritarian, nativist, and populist ideas. We also demonstrate certain peculiarities of this political project, which differentiates it from its European brethren. In fact, the party has adopted very clear neoliberal positions and puts much more emphasis on outgroup distinctions within rather than outside the nation. Moreover, given that Jose Antonio Kast and the Partido Republicano maintain a very fluid relationship with the mainstream right, collaboration between the two seems much simpler and more feasible than in most European cases.
