- Item2D PARTICLE IN UNIFORM CROSSED E, B FIELDS - CONTINUOUS-SPECTRUM, DISCRETE OPTICAL-TRANSITION RULES(1991) CLARO, F; MENDOZA, SA charged particle constrained to move in two dimensions in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field has a discrete energy spectrum. Observed from a moving frame, however, the spectrum is continuous. We show that emission and absorption of photons differ in both frames by a Doppler shift only and that the allowed frequencies are grouped in bands of width proportional to the Compton wavelength.
- ItemCOLLECTIVE SURFACE-MODES IN A FRACTAL CLUSTER OF SPHERES(1991) CLARO, FWe present a theory for finding the collective surface modes in the quasistatic approximation for a fractal cluster of spheres constructed in a recursive manner. The surface-mode positions and strengths are given in terms of the spectral representation for the polarizability of the cluster. Calculations using the dipole approximation for a cluster constructed recursively from an octahedral arrangement of six spheres show that the surface-mode spectrum is approximately self-similar. We calculate the distribution of scaling indices, f (alpha), for this spectrum as a function of the fractal dimension of the cluster in Euclidean space.
- ItemCORRELATION AND MULTIPOLAR EFFECTS IN THE DIELECTRIC RESPONSE OF PARTICULATE MATTER - AN ITERATIVE MEAN-FIELD THEORY(1991) CLARO, F; ROJAS, RA systematic approach for treating correlations and multipolar effects in particulate matter is proposed. The method consists of an iterative extension of the Maxwell-Garnett (MG) mean-field approach. The first iterate beyond MG that involves up to three-particle correlations is solved fully to all multipolar orders using Kirkwood's superposition approximation and yields a simple improved formula for the composite dielectric constant at low filling. We find that at 5% filling resonances that originate in multipolar couplings carry about 6% of the total strength. Our results reproduce accurately low-density measurements on pure argon.

- ItemOPTICAL PROPAGATION IN MULTILAYERED SYSTEMS(1992) LATGE, A; CLARO, FA theoretical study of the light propagation in multilayered insulating structures as a function of the angle of incidence is Performed. Ordered, quasiperiodic and random sequences are discussed. The transmission coefficient exhibits a rich structure of peaks and gaps. In the case of a (quasiperiodic) Fibonacci sequence a selfsimilar behavior for the transmission coefficient is obtained. Results for the electromagnetic energy density inside the sample are presented. We show that the angle of incidence is an ideal experimental variable to study these structures.

- ItemOPTICAL-RESPONSE OF A SUPERLATTICE IN PARALLEL MAGNETIC AND ELECTRIC-FIELD(1992) PACHECO, M; BARTICEVIC, Z; CLARO, FA theory for optical transitions in superlattices placed in magnetic and electric fields Parallel to the growth axis is presented. A six-band model that takes into account band mixing and nonparabolicity effects is developed. Numerical results show excellent agreement with available experimental data if excitonic shifts are taken into account.
- ItemQUANTUM-WELL COMPOUNDS(1992) CLARO, F; MEDINA, RWe show that forming linear sequences of quantum wells of two different types allows for a rich new variety in energy spectra and density of states for nanostructures. In the case of a one-dimensional periodic array such as a string of dots of two kinds, the phase diagram exhibits a new kind of criticality, in the sense that there are conducting phases arbitrarily close in concentration to any insulating phase, and vice versa.
