    A Supernova Candidate from the Siding Spring Survey

    Discovery of Thousands of RR Lyrae by the Catalina Surveys

    We have performed an extensive search for RR Lyrae among the 500 million sources observed by the Catalina Surveys. We detect 23,000 type-ab RR Lyrae (of which 18,700 are new discoveries) from a region spanning 3/4 of the sky. By combining calibrated Catalina photometry with RR Lyrae absolute magnitude estimates, we derive accurate distances and investigate the spatial distribution of structures within the Galactic halo. We identify hundreds of new RR Lyrae belonging to the Sagittarius tidal streams system and compare their observed properties with predictions from existing N-body models. We discover significant evidence that firmly establishes the existence of a tidal stream reaching Galactocentric distances beyond 100 kpc. This stream remains to be explained by any Sagittarius model. For 1,500 of the RR Lyrae we find matches with targets observed by past SDSS spectroscopic surveys. Combining the radial velocities and metallicity estimates from the SDSS spectra, with photometric distances, we investigate the kinematics and abundances of halo tidal stream populations....

They note that the new object lies 5".4 east and 1".1 north from a galaxy seen in Sloan Digital Sky Survey images with measured redshift z = 0.109; the current luminosity of 2010iw appears too high for it to be a regular supernova associated with this distant galaxy. Drake writes that the presumed host galaxy has redshift z = 0.0060. The object was given the designation PSN J11544925-1651436 when posted by Drake on the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage, and based on the spectroscopy below is here assigned the final designation SN 2011ae. D. K. Sahu, S. Arora, and P. Anto, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, report that a low-resolution spectrogram (range 350-930 nm) of 2011ae, obtained on Feb. 21.75 UT with the Indian Astronomical Observatory's 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope (+ HFOSC), shows it to be a normal type-Ia supernova, a few days before maximum light. Using the SNID code of Blondin and Tonry (2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024), the spectrum of 2011ae is found to best match that of SN 1990N at about 5 days before maximum light. Adopting a recession velocity of 1813 km/s for the presumed host galaxy (de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991, Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies), MCG -03-30-19, the velocity corresponding to the Si II 635.5-nm absorption line is 12500 km/s....

This object was designated PSN J02255436+1023111 when posted at the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage by Drake, and based on the spectroscopy below is here designated SN 2011af. Kuiyun Huang and Yoichi Ohyama, Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Academia Sinica; Chia-Jung Chuang, Yuji Urata, and Induk Lee, National Central University, Taiwan; and Eric Y. Hsiao, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, report that the inspection of a CCD spectrum (range 400-900 nm), obtained on Jan. 29.5 UT with the 1.8-m Ritchey Cretien reflector and medium dispersion spectrometer at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory, Korea, shows that SN 2011af is a type-IIn supernova. The spectrum consists of a flat continuum and prominent narrow emission lines of the Balmer series (H-alpha FWHM of about 1500 km/s), with the narrow peaks yielding a redshift of 0.064. The "superfit" program of Howell et al. (2005, Ap.J. 634, 1190) shows its spectrum to be an excellent match to that of SN 1988Z. SN 2011af is measured to have a magnitude r' about 17.2 on Feb. 7.46 UT with the 1-m telescope at the Lulin Observatory in Taiwan; this corresponds to an absolute magnitude of about -20, nearly a month past its initial discovery....

Benetti, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, on behalf of a larger collaboration, report that a low-signal-to-noise spectrogram (range 330-750 nm; resolution 1.5 nm) of PSN J20022093-2013134 = SN 2011ds, obtained on June 26.43 UT with the European Southern Observatory's New Technology Telescope (+ EFOSC2), is consistent with that of a type-II supernova. The spectrum indeed shows strong hydrogen H-alpha at 669.1 nm, mainly in emission with a full-width-at-half-maximum of about 7400 km/s....

Mag. 2011ej July 3.36 22 00 42.26 - 8 15 42.0 18.8 Further CSS magnitudes for 2011ej: June 4.44 UT, [20.3; 23.39, 18.9. A. S. Moskvitin, T. A. Fatkhullin, V. N. Komarova, V. V. Sokolov, and T. N. Sokolova, Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), Russian Academy of Sciences, report that a CCD spectrogram (range 380-790 nm; 1-nm resolution) was taken of 2011ej with the 6-m BTA telescope (+ Scorpio) on July 7 UT. The spectrum reveals strong H I and Fe II lines. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows matches with the spectrum of the type-II-P supernova 2004et at phase +6 days, redshifted to z = 0.042 +/- 0.004. The authors report magnitude V = 18.91 +/- 0.03 for 2011ej, obtained with the same instrument on July 7.988....

Marion, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), on behalf of the CfA Supernova Group, report that a spectrum (range 340-740 nm) of PSN J22402742+0311580 = 2011ga was obtained on Sept. 27 UT by Marion with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST). Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows that the object is a type-Ia supernova a few days after maximum light. The best-fit template spectrum is that of SN 2003du at +2 days. The velocity of the Si II 635.5-nm feature is estimated to be approximately 10800 km/s, using the SNID estimated redshift of z = 0.040....
