    Animals and leisure experiences in wild protected areas in central-south Chile

    This chapter proposes a critical reflection about the roles that non-human animals play in leisure experiences in wild protected areas, connected to the construction of 'sense of place' and conceptual understandings of nature. It is based on two studies carried out separately, in the El Cañi Sanctuary, the Huerquehue National Park, the Conguillio National Park and the Villarrica National Park, in La Araucanía region. Although wild protected areas in Chile (South America) have experienced a sustained increase in visitors in recent decades, in most cases the appeal of leisure activities in these spaces seems to be strongly connected to the attractiveness of their landscapes, apparently unrelated to the observation and interaction with non-human animals.

    ¿Podemos salir a jugar afuera? Estudio sobre Barreras para el Desarrollo de Experiencias en Contacto con la Naturaleza

    En las últimas décadas se ha acrecentado el distanciamiento de niños, niñas y adolescentes con experiencias de contacto con la naturaleza (ECN), con efectos en las conductas pro ecológicas y pro sociales, pero también en un deterioro de la salud física y mental. A través de una metodología mixta de entrevistas a directivos, a niños/as y cuestionarios a apoderados/as identificamos los factores que dificultan la práctica de ECN en niños/as de cuatro a ocho años de la Región de La Araucanía, Chile. Los padres y madres identifican factores sociales (e.g. gestión del tiempo) y factores de seguridad (e.g. tráfico) como barreras importantes para el desarrollo de estas actividades. Además, las normativas y programas escolares también no favorecen estas experiencias. Los hallazgos se discuten en términos de promoción de estas actividades, entendiendo a la naturaleza como un sistema de relaciones que nos contiene y que también estructuramos

    Unnatural Pumas and Domestic Foxes: Relations with Protected Predators and Conspiratorial Rumours in Southern Chile

    Human-wildlife conflicts involving protected predators are a major social and environmental problem worldwide. A critical aspect in such conflicts is the role of state institutions regarding predators' conservation, and how this is construed by affected local populations. These interpretations are frequently embodied in conspiratorial rumours, sharing some common traits related to wild and domestic categories, spatial ordering and power relations. In southern Chile, a one-year, multi-sited ethnographic study of human-animal relations in and adjacent to protected areas was undertaken, foregrounding conspiratorial rumours concerning protected predators. Through an analysis of this study and related international cases, this article argues that the uncritical dismissal of rumours and the categories used to interpret such conflicts have detrimental impacts on the conservation of wild predators. Such rumours should be understood as significant comment devices within human-animal relations and the power dynamics that frame human groups affected by them.
