A modal-causal argument for a concrete necessary object
    (2021) Alvarado Marambio, José Tomás
Suppose that it is metaphysically possible that the mereological fusion of all contingent states of affairs has a cause. Whatever the nature of the state of affairs that causes such mereological fusion, it should be metaphysically necessary because, otherwise, it could be part of the mereological fusion it causes. It is possible, then, that there is at least one necessary state of affairs. This state of affairs is a causal relatum, so it must include at least one concrete necessary object. But if something is possibly necessary, then it is necessary because it is not metaphysically contingent whether something is necessary or doesn't. Then, it results that it is metaphysically necessary that there is, at least, a concrete necessary object. This work presents and discusses this argument.

    Agnosticismo modal
    (2008) Alvarado Marambio, José Tomás
This work presents modal agnosticism as a new program in modal metaphysics. The modal agnostic believes only in the existence of the actual world and no other. He preserves, nonetheless, the realist semantics for modal statements and the analyses proposed by the realist of modal concepts. If we grant the modal agnostic knowledge of (i) logical facts, (ii) semantic facts, and (iii) facts about the actual world, he or she can replicate a large part of the capacities of the realist has for asserting modal propositions. Here it is argued that logical knowledge seems to be —at least prima facie— a form of modal knowledge. It is reasonable, then, to suppose that the knowledge claimed by the agnostic is also knowledge of possibilities. Modal agnosticism is a position that seems to be unstably situated between a form of outright modal realism, on the one hand, and a radical and unfeasible form of agnosticism, on the other

    ÁLGEBRAS DE UNIVERSALES
(Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Instituto de Investigaciones Filosoficas, 2024) Alvarado Marambio, José Tomás
Several philosophers have proposed an "algebraic" view of universals according to which there are operations from universals to universals. It is not obvious, nevertheless, how those operations should be interpreted, and what impact they have for the conditions of identity of universals. There are two main interpretations of the algebra of universals. On one hand, it has been interpreted as ways to "construct" complex universals. On the other hand, it has been interpreted as "morphisms" or "mappings", but not as something that "builds" complex universals from others more basic. In this paper, the comparative advantages of both conceptions are assessed and reasons are offered to prefer the second conception.

    Analogía en las atribuciones divinas
(2014) Alvarado Marambio, José Tomás; Gubbins Pereira Das Neves, Juan Luis; Morales Pérez, Diego Hernán
© Claudia Seggiaro, México, D.F., julio-diciembre, 2014.It has been traditionally sustained that predicates attributed to God and to the creatures are analogical predicates. But, what is analogy? Several philosophers have thought that analogy should be taken as a form of ambiguity. Here we argue that predicates attributed to God and to creatures are neither ambiguous nor vague. Following some suggestions given by McDaniel, we propose a view of analogy in which the semantic phenomenon is associated with the more or less natural character of the property or properties that the entities that satisfy the analogous predicate instantiate. A predicate "θ" is analogous if and only if the property Θ, which something instantiates, if and only if it is θ, is less natural that any property Ξ so that anything that instantiates Ξ, instantiates Θ. Furthermore, it is required that the entities of which the analogous term is predicated should be either ontologically or epistemically dependent on each other.

    Analolgy in divine attributions

Following some suggestions given by McDaniel, we propose a view of analogy in which the semantic phenomenon is associated with the more or less natural character of the property or properties that the entities that satisfy the analogous predicate instantiate. A predicate “q” is analogous if and only if the property Q, which something instantiates, if and only if it is q, is less natural that any property X so that anything that instantiates X, instantiates Q. Furthermore, it is required that the entities of which the analogous term is predicated should be either ontologically or epistemically dependent on each other.
