    A SEMANTIC APPROACH FOR DYNAMICALLY DETERMINING COMPLEX COMPOSED SERVICE BEHAVIOUR

    Dynamic Web services composition aims to generate a composition plan at run-time. Semantic-based techniques rely on annotating services to facilitate the discovery of the service components that satisfy a user need (matchmaking). The matchmaking process places most attention on service selection rather than on the behaviour of the composed service, and the service components are arranged considering simple control-flow patterns (mainly sequence). In real life scenarios, however, composed service behaviour follows complex control-flow patterns that satisfy the needs of business processes, which are generally defined through manual service composition. In this paper we present a technique to derive complex composed service behaviour semantics, such semantics make possible to dynamically and automatically discover complex services compositions. We have implemented and tested our technique with a known dataset with better performance when compared to simple service composition strategies.

    Implementing collaborative learning activities in the classroom supported by one-to-one mobile computing: A design-based process

    Mobile devices such as PDAs, smartphones and tablet computers are becoming increasingly popular, setting out opportunities for new ways of communicating and collaborating. Research initiatives have ascertained the potential of mobile devices in education, and particularly, the benefits of incorporating them in the classroom for eliciting collaborative learning and active student participation. However, the development of technology-supported learning environments poses challenges to education researchers, practitioners, and software technologists in creating educational tools that respond to real needs of instructors and learners, meet clearly defined didactic purposes, and are practical for the intended audience. This article reports on a technology for facilitating the implementation of collaborative learning environments in the classroom supported by one-to-one mobile computing. The approach encompasses a framework supporting the design and implementation of the mobile software, and a design-based process that guides interdisciplinary efforts utilizing the framework, towards creating effective pedagogical models based on collaborative learning. The proposed design-based process allowed us to develop pedagogical models that respond to real needs of learners and instructors, where development is grounded on rigorous scientific research, allowing to reuse both knowledge and software, and showing an improvement of the mobile software built based on continuous experimentation and evaluation. A case study illustrating the application of the technology is presented and plans for future research are discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

    Multiple Mice based collaborative one-to-one learning

    Exchange is a collaborative learning application, originally developed for wirelessly interconnected Pocket PCs, that provides support for students and a teacher performing a face-to-face computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) activity in a Single Input/Single Display (SISD) mode. We extend the application to support a single display groupware (SDG) mode. In this new version, named Exchange-MM, three users each with their own mouse (Multiple Mice) interact on a single display with mediation by a technological network. The original collaborative interaction is maintained. We describe a collaborative learning activity and the software architecture that supports both interaction modes, and also present a usability analysis of the activity conducted with second-grade schoolchildren. The results show that as in SISD mode, in SDG with Multiple Mice (MM) the technological network improves communication, negotiation, interactivity, coordination and appropriability between members of collaborative learning groups.     Patterns of Library Use by Undergraduate Students in a Chilean University

    This paper explores the patterns of use of print materials and digital resources in an undergraduate library in a Chilean university, by the students' discipline and year of study. A quantitative analysis was carried out, including descriptive analysis of contingency tables, chi-squared tests, t-tests, and multiple linear regressions. The results showed that the use of the library by undergraduate students did not follow a common pattern and instead varied across disciplines. The article also shows that access to digital resources does not replace the use of print materials.

    SAW-Q: a dynamic composition approach of REST services based on queue model

    Service composition is one of the principles of service-oriented architecture; it enables reuse and allows developers to combine existing services in order to create new services that in turn can be part of another composition. Dynamic composition requires that service components are chosen from a set of services with equal or similar functionality at runtime and possibly automatically. The adoption of the REST services in the industry has led to a growing number of services of this type, many with similar functionality. The existing dynamic composition techniques are method-oriented whereas REST is resource-oriented and consider only traditional (WSDL/SOAP) services. We propose SAW-Q, an extension of simple additive weighting (SAW), as a novel dynamic composition technique that follows the principles of the REST style. Additionally, SAW-Q models quality attributes as a function of the actual service demand instead of the traditional constant values. Our model is much more accurate when compared to real implementation, positively improving the quality of dynamic service compositions.
