- ItemBASS XXXII: Studying the Nuclear Millimeter-wave Continuum Emission of AGNs with ALMA at Scales ≲100-200 pc(2022) Kawamuro, Taiki; Ricci, Claudio; Imanishi, Masatoshi; Mushotzky, Richard F.; Izumi, Takuma; Ricci, Federica; Bauer, Franz E.; Koss, Michael J.; Trakhtenbrot, Benny; Ichikawa, Kohei; Rojas, Alejandra F.; Smith, Krista Lynne; Shimizu, Taro; Oh, Kyuseok; den Brok, Jakob S.; Baba, Shunsuke; Balokovic, Mislay; Chang, Chin-Shin; Kakkad, Darshan; Pfeifle, Ryan W.; Privon, George C.; Temple, Matthew J.; Ueda, Yoshihiro; Harrison, Fiona; Powell, Meredith C.; Stern, Daniel; Urry, Meg; Sanders, David B.To understand the origin of nuclear (less than or similar to 100 pc) millimeter-wave (mm-wave) continuum emission in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we systematically analyzed subarcsecond resolution Band-6 (211-275 GHz) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array data of 98 nearby AGNs (z < 0.05) from the 70 month Swift/BAT catalog. The sample, almost unbiased for obscured systems, provides the largest number of AGNs to date with high mm-wave spatial resolution sampling (similar to 1-200 pc), and spans broad ranges of 14-150 keV luminosity {40< log [L-14(-150)/(erg s(-1))] < 45}, black hole mass [5 < log(M-BH/M-circle dot) < 10], and Eddington ratio (-4 < log lambda(Edd) < 2). We find a significant correlation between 1.3 mm (230 GHz) and 14-150 keV luminosities. Its scatter is approximate to 0.36 dex, and the mm-wave emission may serve as a good proxy of the AGN luminosity, free of dust extinction up to N-H similar to 10(26) CM-2. While the mm-wave emission could be self-absorbed synchrotron radiation around the X-ray corona according to past works, we also discuss different possible origins of the mm-wave emission: AGN-related dust emission, outflow-driven shocks, and a small-scale (<200 pc) jet. The dust emission is unlikely to be dominant, as the mm-wave slope is generally flatter than expected. Also, due to no increase in the mm-wave luminosity with the Eddington ratio, a radiation-driven outflow model is possibly not the common mechanism Furthermore, we find independence of the mm-wave luminosity on indicators of the inclination angle from the polar axis of the nuclear structure, which is inconsistent with a jet model whose luminosity depends only on the angle.

Due to the hard-X-ray (>10 keV) selection, the sample is nearly unbiased for obscured systems at least up to Compton-thick-level obscuration, and provides the largest number of AGNs with high-physical-resolution mm-wave data (less than or similar to 100-200 pc). Our catalog reports emission peak coordinates, spectral indices, and peak fluxes and luminosities at 1.3 mm (230 GHz). Additionally, high-resolution mm-wave images are provided. Using the images and creating radial surface brightness profiles of mm-wave emission, we identify emission extending from the central sources and isolated blob-like emission. Flags indicating the presence of these emission features are tabulated. Among 90 AGNs with significant detections of nuclear emission, 37 AGNs (approximate to 41%) appear to have both or one of extended or blob-like components. We, in particular, investigate AGNs that show well-resolved mm-wave components and find that these seem to have a variety of origins (i.e., a jet, radio lobes, a secondary AGN, stellar clusters, a narrow-line region, galaxy disk, active star formation regions, or AGN-driven outflows), and some components have currently unclear origins.
- ItemNear- to mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopy of two buried AGNs of the nearby merging galaxy NGC 6240 with Subaru/IRCS plus AO and GTC/CanariCam(2014) Mori, Tamami I.; Imanishi, Masatoshi; Alonso-Herrero, Almudena; Packham, Chris; Almeida, Cristina Ramos; Nikutta, Robert; Gonzalez-Martin, Omaira; Perlman, Eric; Saito, Yuriko; Levenson, Nancy A.We report near-infrared K', L', and M' band imaging observations of the nearby merging galaxy NGC 6240 with the Infrared Camera and Spectrograph on the Subaru telescope. The observations were performed with the assistance of the Subaru Adaptive Optics System, and the achieved spatial resolutions were around 0 ''.10-0 ''.20. We also obtained new mid-infrared imaging in the Si-2 filter band (8.7 mu m) and N-band (7.5-13 mu m) spectroscopy of this galaxy with the CanariCam on the Gran Telescopio Canarias with a spatial resolution of 0 ''.4-0 ''.5. In the K' band image the two nuclei of the galaxy each show a double peak suggesting the complex geometry of the source, while the L', M', and Si-2 band images show single compact structures in each of the two nuclei. Assuming that the center core observed at wavelengths longer than 3.8 mu m is associated with dust heated by the buried AGN, we re-evaluated the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the southern nucleus from 2 to 30 mu m with additional literature values, and performed the SED+spectroscopy fit using the clumpy torus models of Nenkova et al. (2008a, ApJ, 685, 145; 2008b, ApJ, 685, 160) and a Bayesian fitting approach. The model fit suggests that the high covering factor torus emission in the southern nucleus is also obscured by foreground dust in the host galaxy. The estimated AGN bolometric luminosity of the southern nucleus, L-bol(AGN) similar to 1 x 10(45) erg s(-1), accounts for approximately 40% of the whole luminosity of the system.

C.; Ferrara, Andrea; Fujimoto, Seiji; Hashimoto, Takuya; Inoue, Akio K.; Iwasawa, Kazushi; Nishimura, Yuri; Imanishi, Masatoshi; Ono, Yoshiaki; Saito, Toshiki; Sugahara, Yuma; Umehata, Hideki; Vallini, Livia; Wang, Tao; Zavala, Jorge A.We present an analysis of the Atacama Large Millimeter-submillimeter Array (ALMA) multiband dust continuum observations for 28 spectroscopically confirmed bright Lyman break galaxies at 5 < z < 8. Our sample consists of 11 galaxies at z similar to 6 newly observed in our ALMA program, which substantially increases the number of 5 < z < 8 galaxies with both rest-frame 88 and 158 mu m continuum observations, allowing us to simultaneously measure the IR luminosity and dust temperature for a statistical sample of z greater than or similar to 5 galaxies for the first time. We derive the relationship between the ultraviolet (UV) slope (beta(UV)) and infrared excess (IRX) for the z similar to 6 galaxies, and find a shallower IRX-beta(UV) relation compared to the previous results at z similar to 2-4. Based on the IRX-beta(UV) relation consistent with our results and the beta(UV)-M-UV relation including fainter galaxies in the literature, we find a limited contribution of the dust-obscured star formation to the total star formation rate density, similar to 30% at z similar to 6. Our measurements of the dust temperature at z similar to 6-7, T-dust = 40.9(-9.1)(+10.0) K on average, support a gentle increase of T-dust from z = 0 to z similar to 6-7. Using an analytic model with parameters consistent with recent James Webb Space Telescope results, we discuss that the observed redshift evolution of the dust temperature can be reproduced by an similar to 0.6 dex decrease in the gas depletion timescale and similar to 0.4 dex decrease in the metallicity. The variety of T-dust observed at high redshifts can also be naturally explained by scatters around the star formation main sequence and average mass-metallicity relation including an extremely high dust temperature of T-dust > 80 K observed in a galaxy at z = 8.3.
